Building Up Builder Grade Cabinets

As I transition out of the corporate world, I am looking forward to being able to focus on creative and hands-on projects.  I have gotten a jump start, by working on my friend's kitchen cabinets, and wanted to give you an update on the progress.

I'm finally to the point that I'm spraying them with paint, and I'm loving the way that they're looking.  So fresh, and such a great change from the builder-grade oak!  As part of the plan, Kelly had a carpenter come in and build up the cabinets to the ceiling, and trim them out with crown molding.

What a difference, wouldn't you agree?

To refresh your memory - here's what it looked like before:

And now...

If only paint would dry faster!

I can't wait to get this kitchen put back together again!!

Winner: Target's Threshold Brand

Once again, we're pulling out the snow pants and snow boots here!  I'm sooo desperate for spring, I can hardly stand it, and thankfully, Target delivers, regardless of what Mother Nature has in mind.

Have you seen their Threshold brand?  Target has been taunting and teasing me with their enticing print and television ads, so I finally just had to go see it for myself.

I don't think there was a single thing that I didn't like.  I dare you not to like it.  No, I triple dog dare you.

Let's start with window treatments, shall we?  I am having a hard time picking a favorite among all of these great color combinations, and the graphic embellishment at the bottom is divine.

Then we move over to the storage/furniture section.  Would you just look at these fun punches of spring color?

This one is just a happy little thing.  I would love to see two of them paired at the foot of a bed or underneath a console table, just looking pretty.

On we go, to some great accessories.  I spied lots of great looking lamp shades in all sorts of different prints and colors.  And who isn't craving baskets with spring cleaning on the brain?

Again, more great prints and those little industrial stools caught my eye.

I don't know what it is with me and storage cubes, but I love them!  You can just tuck them away anywhere, and who doesn't love pretty storage options?  Again, I love everything in this photo.  Every. last. thing.

And then Target even delivers on the outdoor decor.  More lovely outdoor ideas - great patterns on the cubes and those basket-like outdoor ottomans could double as great textural side tables.  Genius!

Notice a pattern here?  Another fantastic foot stool in a fresh and glorious color.  And don't you love the lavender and the chartreuse green paired together?  I can't help myself!

I suppose that's one thing about living in a seasonal climate.  You really appreciate the change of seasons, and I think I appreciate Spring most of all.

Painting Builder Grade Cabinets

Thanks to all of you for your kind words regarding my decision to drop out of the rat race.  I'm getting more and more excited about it with each passing day, and it's a really liberating feeling.

If there's any question about whether I'll have enough to do while I'm home, I'll be the first to say that there are plenty of items on the list!  I mentioned that I'm helping my friend Kelly, redo her kitchen, and have been hard at work, spraying her builder grade oak kitchen cabinets.  (I am secretly hoping to transform many builder grade, oak cabinets across southwest Ohio, one kitchen at a time.)

So far, so good.  I have been taking time to work on minimizing the grain of the cabinets by doing more than one coat of primer.  You can see here, that it definitely makes a difference!  And, since I'm spraying them, the coats are nice and thin.

We're also making changes to the original plan when it comes to the backsplash in her kitchen, and we're both smitten kittens with this gorgeous penny tile.  Amazing!

We found a carpenter who is going to build the cabinets to the ceiling and trim them out with crown molding to give her kitchen a custom look.  This penny tile is going to be like, "BLAM!" when it all comes together!  UPDATE:  Look!  You can read about the cabinet build up hereBut check out the photos below - awesomeness!

On the homefront, my husband finally got busy installed cabinets in his office in his efforts to get organized.  So, in a flurry, I started taking down the wallpaper, so I didn't have to peel it off around the cabinets.  But, for the moment, it's another war zone.

And FYI, that's what the walls looked like that underneath the wallpaper - it wasn't the result of the wallpaper being removed.  And, yes, I have plenty of spackle, thanks for asking.  We're going to trim the cabinets out with molding as well, and give this space an update with new paint, window seat cushions, window treatments and a new rug.

So yes, I'll be busy.  Can't wait!

What are you working on right now?

Big. Life. Changes.

Hello friends!

After 20 years of working in the corporate world, I turned in my resignation on Monday.  Yes, there will be one less rat in the Rat Race beginning in April.  It was not an easy decision, and if you're a change-phobe like me, you can appreciate what a monumental life shift this is.

But, in the end, it's all good.  I was reading an article in "Real Simple" last week, and came across an article called "10 Things Your Mother Never Taught You", and among them was "How to Walk Away".  There was some good advice that resonated with me as I go through this process, and one key point was to look at leaving a job as "an investment in your future, happier self."  In this process, I need to learn to "get comfortable with the uncomfortable" when it comes to dealing with the feelings that come up with big change like this.

So, that's what I'm doing.

Bear with me as I start this exciting new chapter in my life.  I'm looking forward to focusing on my family and having time to dedicate to the things I'm passionate about, and investing in my future, happier self.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this road leads me.

The Ottoman Empire

Happy Monday!

I hope you enjoyed some glorious spring temperatures like we did here.  The kids were outside almost all day, and the snow is all but gone.  It was wonderful to open the windows and let some fresh air into the house for a change.  Of course, all of that playing is going to make for some morning shenanigans with the time change and all.  Should be fun.

Since I'm reworking my daughter's room, I made a trip to the Ballard Outlet (again), and was pleasantly surprised by the Mother Load of stuff that they had!  I'm hoping this trend continues, as they have been somewhat sparse the past couple of times I've visited.

I did make one fantastic score, although it was at Grandin Road, not Ballard.  I seem to have an obsession/fixation with ottomans, and have been searching for The Right One for our family room for awhile now.  But at the same time, our house seems littered with ottomans (I suppose you could say we have a-lot-ottomans), and are afflicted with the Three Bears Syndrome.  They're either too small, the wrong color, or the wrong height, etc..  This one is just right, in every way.

Here she is...

I'm loving the tufting.  And the price.  Did I mention it was $129?  Awwww yeah.

And the nailhead trim...

And the pretty wooden legs.

Not to mention the color and size - perfect!  I also seem to have a fixation with navy right now.  I just can't get enough of it!  Did you notice I pulled my pillows from the basement and brought them upstairs?  Oh yes I did.  It's nice to shop the house and change things around every now and again.

You might have noticed my new little "table" I found at TJ Maxx.  Cute, yes?  How could I refuse at $39.99?  Certainly not me.

Please ignore any ancillary disaster that may be in my breakfast room.  The house is in the midst of a project explosion, and this area is probably the only space that looks semi-presentable at the moment.  But it sure is pretty.

Lots of exciting things coming down the pike in the upcoming weeks - can't wait to share it all with you!

February Project Features!

Hello and TGIF!

I hope you've all had a good week, and if Mother Nature gave you an end of season winter wallop, it's on its way out!  That's the only thing that is allowing me to embrace the prettiness of it - it will be short-lived.

Thanks to all who linked up to my February project party last week, and as always, you all do not disappoint!

Check out Maria's amazing craigslist chair makeover over at Our Lake Life.  Fantastic!  I love the fresh fabric mix that she chose, don't you?

I was blown away by the transformation Kat pulled off in her master bedroom reveal at Maple Leaves & Sycamore Trees.  You won't believe your eyes when you see where this gorgeous retreat began.  I'm having a hard time picking out my favorite part of this luxurious space - there are so many beautiful elements!

Then there's Jen's multi-functional room of awesomeness at de Jong Dream House.  Is it an inviting guest room, a play room, or a hang out space?  The choice is yours!  I think if I had a room like this in my house, my kids would LIVE in there.

Have a wonderfully productive weekend and grab a button from my sidebar if you were featured!

Girl's Room in Green and a Master Peg Board

In my quest to put a dent in my never-ending list of projects, I have a couple things to share.  My daughter has been after me for awhile now, asking for a new color in her bedroom, so I finally got down to business.  Like all projects around here, it's morphing into something more, but it's off to a great start.  Here is a preview:

I'm loving this green, and it's just feeding my spring fever, on the eve of more wintry weather, no less.  Mother Nature needs to have it out with Old Man Winter - he has overstayed his welcome!

Then, as part of my Quest for Organization this year, I added a pegboard to my master closet, taking me one step closer to organizational bliss.  Is it sad that this hole-filled piece of fiber board makes me happy?  I don't even mind putting things away now!

I especially love that all of my necklaces are not in a tangled, knotted mess displayed so that I can grab one and go on my merry way.

For now I'm hanging my scarves here too.

And a little hook for belts too.

Here is how this space has evolved so far -

Sometimes it's the little things that make you happy, isn't it?  I'm thinking I need to add one of these peg boards to my daughter's room, since she tends to have hoarder tendencies likes to collect things.

What are you working on this week?  Don't forget to link up to the February Project Party!

February in Review, a Linky Party and a Winner!

Happy Friday!

I don't know about you, but there is no love lost in saying good-bye to February!  March brings the promise of Spring, daylight savings time, March Madness, St. Patrick's Day and Easter!  I'll take it!

I started off by sharing a lovely local shop called Circa.  I was just in there again the other day and her little shop was filled with a bunch of new goodies!

I shared a mood board for a kitchen refresh I'm working on for a friend (and offering to readers).  I was just over there today giving her sample boards to choose cabinet colors - we're getting close, and I'm so excited to get started!
My daughter and I got crafty for Valentine's Day with some owl-inspired goodie bags for her 1st grade class.

I was thrilled to be invited to share my favorite room at Savvy Southern Style.

The organizational madness continued this month with some closet inspiration and some actual progress in my own master closet!  More progress has been made, and I can't wait to share it with you this month.  For now, I'm enjoying the Zen feeling I get every time I go in here!

The winner of the Mood Board Giveaway is KB - who commented, "I desperately need help with my guest bedroom. It needs color on the walls, pretty bedding, different furniture and help with the walls! I have run out of steam and ideas."  I will be contacting you shortly!

Ok friends, what have you been up to this month?  I loved seeing your projects and progress last month - let's see how you've been handling the winter doldrums!
